(Health-NewsWire.Net, January 16, 2015 ) Calgary, AB -- Depression is a condition in which a person feels discouraged, sad, hopeless, unmotivated, or disinterested in life in general. When these feelings last for more than two weeks and when the feelings interfere with daily activities such as taking care of family or going to work or school, it's is considered to be a depressive episode.
Nutriden Inc., an emerging supplement company founded by its president Tom Shumlich, states, "Today's ever growing health conscience society is taking notice of the great benefits that Omega 3 fatty acids have and are now more and more apt to seek out nutritional products to help conditions that they thought previously were only treatable with pharmaceuticals."
Depression affects all people regardless of age, geographic location, or social position. Approximately 18.8 million American adults, or about 9.5 percent of the U.S. population age 18 and older in a given year, have a depressive disorder. According to the numbers by the CDC, 9% of Americans report they are depressed at least occasionally, or have depressive episodes, and 3.4% suffer from major depression.
According to the 2007 National Health Interview Survey, Omega 3 DHA supplements are the nonvitamin/nonmineral natural product most commonly taken by adults. The statistics, while not comprehensively measured since then, have been shown to have measured growth through other individual studies. Among survey participants who had used selected natural products in the last 30 days, about 37 percent of adults (10.9 million) and 31 percent of children (441,000) had taken an omega-3 supplement for health reasons.
The largest study ever conducted assessing Omega-3's efficacy in treating major depression was published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry. Conducted by McGill University, Université Laval in Quebec City and Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, the study found the use of Omega-3 supplements is effective among patients with major depression - those with depressive episodes - who do not have anxiety disorders.
