download Rapid STD Testing Private, Affordable, and Fast (Health-NewsWire.Net, March 30, 2015 ) St. Louis, Mo. -- The New York City Department of Health issued brand new statistics show that prevalence of syphilis in Chelsea have increased to six times the citywide average. Thus, Chelsea has the highest infection rate in the city with 138 cases being reported in 2013. Chelsea area now averages 93.3 cases per 100,000 citizens compared to the rest of New York City, which had a total of 1,167 cases that averages to 14 cases per 100,000 citizens in 2013. This data cements Chelsea as the highest site of syphilis infection in the nation. According to the CDC, San Francisco is second with a syphilis infection rate of 60 per 100,000 citizens. The 2014 statics show an 8% rise of syphilis infection rates across NYC, and partial numbers for 2014 show 628 new cases for the first half of 2014. During the same time in 2013, the number of new cases in NYC is 585. As of yet, the Department of Health has not released the full 2014 statistics for NYC. However, the DOH has released the following statement about the rise in syphilis infections. "In NYC, the vast majority of syphilis cases are among men, specifically men who have sex with men." The DOH goes on to say, "The increasing syphilis incidence is driven by unprotected sex." The statistics show that in NYC, 1,133 men became infected compared to only 27 women. Anthony Hayes of AIDS service organization GMHC speculates that the increase of syphilis infections may be due to the lack of visible symptoms when syphilis is first contracted. Dr. Vera Antonios from Harlem's United Clinic on East 126th Street agrees with Hayes's assumption. Antonios states, "If people are looking for symptoms, they may not see any." Most of Antonios syphilis cases are diagnosed when they come to the clinic for treatment of other illnesses. Anotonios backs up the DOH data by stating that she has seen lots of new syphilis cases among her male homosexual patients. Syphilis can be contracted without intercourse. Oral sex can help spread the disease rapidly. If syphilis is caught early, one dose of penicillin can treat it. If syphilis lingers in the body undetected, it can cause long-term damage. The illness has three stages. In one stage, rashes and sores may appear in the arms or genital. However, these rashes are not itchy. Thus, the rashes can go unnoticed. If syphilis goes untreated for too long, the disease moves to the brain causing confusion and hair loss. Hayes recommended frequent (several times a year) testing for the disease due to the lack of visible symptoms. Rapid Screenings Center offers testing in the New York area. This is a good alternative to the DOH's Chelsea's STD Clinic, which is set to close on March 31 for a two to three-year renovation. NYC is trying to decrease the spread of syphilis by supplying millions of condoms to its citizens. The city is also running an education program on the disease for healthcare workers, and it is offering sliding-scale testing and treatment.
