Although it is difficult to say exactly how many people are affected by this painful problem, for those who experience calf cramps frequently it can be a very aggravating and disruptive health problem. Part of the issue is that a cramp can strike without warning and cause excruciating pain.
Calf cramps can occur anytime, and they often happen during or right after extended periods of exercise. Perhaps the most disconcerting occurrence is when they wake a person out of a deep sleep in the middle of the night.
There are a number of possible causes for cramps, including electrolyte imbalance or deficiencies, dehydration, overtraining, drug side affects, and inactivity.
