(Health-NewsWire.Net, December 25, 2015 ) Titusville, FL -- The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) published a fact sheet on their website about mercury with the goal of informing the public about the hazards of elemental mercury. The fact sheet includes details regarding mercury exposure and its effects. Due to potential hazards, using digital instant thermometers such as Dr. Madre is recommended instead of glass thermometers containing elemental mercury.
Also known as metallic mercury, elemental mercury is the shiny, silver-gray metal that can be found in glass thermometers, barometers, thermostats, and electrical switches. People are usually exposed to this metal when household equipment containing mercury gets broken, and they accidentally swallow, touch or breathe the vapor. Swallowing or touching mercury may not be enough to fully harm someone, but inhaling it is most dangerous to the health.
Elemental mercury can be toxic to the nervous system, lungs, and kidneys. According to ATSDR, short term effects include: cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, chest pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, increase in blood rate and pressure, metallic taste in the mouth, eye irritation, headache, and vision problems. Long-term effects from prolonged exposure to elemental mercury include: anxiety, excessive shyness, anorexia, sleeping problems, appetite loss, irritability, fatigue, forgetfulness, tremors, and changes in vision and hearing.
The fact sheet also specifies that any amount of mercury spilled indoors can be hazardous, which is why parents have turned their backs on old-school glass thermometers and chose digital thermometers such as Dr. Madre infrared, non-contact, talking thermometer. Dr. Madre is safe to use, since it does not contain mercury. The thermometer uses infrared to read body temperature instead. It also has modern functions such as its talking feature and an LCD screen where the result can be read. The thermometer provides more accurate readings in less time.
MedX Dispensing, Inc. is an authorized seller of Dr. Madre Infrared Thermometer and Dr. Madre Bedwetting Alarm, which are both available on Amazon.
