(Health-NewsWire.Net, January 27, 2015 ) Calgary, AB -- Nutriden, a privately held Nutraceuticals company, publicized that Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil have been shown to reduce breast cancer risk.
About 40,000 women in the U.S. were expected to die in 2014 from breast cancer, though death rates have been decreasing since 1989. These decreases are thought to be the result of treatment advances, earlier detection through screening, and increased awareness on prevention. Besides skin cancer, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women. Just under 30% of cancers in women are breast cancers.
In an excerpt from Nutriden's ebook "Omega 3 Fish Oil: The Quickest And Easiest Way To A Lifetime Reward Of Optimal Health" it says "Breast cancer is a malignant tumor that starts in the cells of the breast. The American Cancer Society's estimates for breast cancer in the United States for 2014 were:
- About 232,670 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women.
- About 62,570 new cases of carcinoma in situ (CIS) will be diagnosed (CIS is non-invasive and is the earliest form of breast cancer).
…these numbers are real and devastating for these women and their families. All the more reason to study safe natural treatments that can help provide relief from side effects due to chemotherapy and help with a cure."
A study published in the British Medical Journal by Professor Duo Li and his team from Zhejiang University, China, found a dose-response relationship that showed a 5% lower risk of breast cancer per 0.1g/day or 0.1% energy/day increment of dietary marine omega-3. The research found that marine omega-3 fatty acids was associated with a 14% reduction of breast cancer between the highest and lowest category of intake, but no significant protective association was found for ALA - the plant based omega-3.
This has also been true in other studies. For this study, the research analysis included data from 26 publications, including 20,905 cases of breast cancer in five studies and 883,585 participants from 21 independent prospective cohort studies from the United States, Europe and Asia.
Lead author of the study, Professor Duo Li, noted: "Our findings have important public health implications. The prevention of breast cancer continues to be an important public health issue for researchers, especially with regard to the investigation of relations between breast cancer, diet, and lifestyle."
