(Health-NewsWire.Net, January 02, 2015 ) Beaverton, Oregon -- Probiotics have been making headlines for years but recent studies are beginning to discover just how closely connected gut health and organ health truly are.
Recent findings coming out of Cleveland Clinic now point to the possibility of gut biome having an effect on heart health and that using probiotics as a weapon against heart disease is exciting news.
"I do already take probiotics, and will now be recommending them even more strongly to my patients." says Chauncey Crandell, M.D.
Generally speaking, people take probiotics as a solution to digestive issues and as a way to promote gut health. Maintaining a healthy balance of good to bad bacteria within the GI tract has been shown to have a positive effect on overall health as the good bacteria crowds out the unfriendly flora.
"We have known for many years that gut health has a direct influence on every aspect of overall health." says Victoria Playfair, of Savi Wellness Probiotics. "With new research coming forth, such as the findings from the Cleveland Clinic, it becomes even more apparent that the bacterial makeup of our gut is a fine balance. We can no longer ignore the importance of using a probiotic supplement to restore and maintain this balance."
New findings, such as those coming from Cleveland Clinic, now make the use of probiotics even more significant to overall health. By maintaining a healthy amount of good bacteria, these heart disease inducing bacteria cannot are kept to a diminished level.
"This is a very exciting study," said Dr. Crandall. "It gives us a brand-new way of looking at heart disease. It also opens an avenue for new tests and treatments."
"We always knew that there was more than one factor generating or driving the development of heart disease, and now we know about this one," added Dr. Crandall, who is head of preventive medicine and cardiology services at the world-renowned Palm Beach Cardiovascular Clinic.
Research from the Cleveland Clinic study points to a particularly nasty stomach bacteria as a factor in heart disease.
And the culprit may actually come from the consumption of red meat. Lecithin is a nutrient found in beef, pork, wheat germ, liver and egg yolks. What the study results showed was that particular bacteria found in the stomach turns the lecithin into trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO). This compound hinders the body in ridding itself of cholesterol. Greater levels of TMAO increase the risk of heart health issues.
Research findings indicated that vegetarians had the lowest levels of TMAO, while those that ate a diet that contained the most red meat had the highest levels of TMAO.
Is red meat safe to eat in even small amounts? This remains to be seen, but the results do point to the fact that if eat red meat is consumed in any amounts, a probiotic supplement may be just what the doctor ordered.
