The Arthritis Foundation has provided facts about how walking can help with knee osteoarthritis. According to the study published by the Arthritis Care & Research journal, taking 6,000 steps every day can significantly help reduce the risk of functional limitations for knee osteoarthritis patients. These limitations refer to mobility problems, such as walking short distances or climbing the stairs.

Daniel K. White is an assistant professor and physical therapist at the Boston University College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. These participants were instructed to wear an activity monitor for one week to see how much they moved.
The team found that, after two years of measuring their activity level, 4 to 8 percent had suffered from functional limitations. Researchers also found that taking 5,000 steps every day could help as well. White added that individuals who walked over 5,000 steps were 50 percent less likely to suffer from functional limitations than those who walked less than 5,000 steps.
