(Health-NewsWire.Net, April 10, 2015 ) Orlando, FL -- Arthritis causes pain and suffering, and patients are often hindered from doing their daily routines or going to work. This is one of the biggest problems associated with the condition. However, it seems that there are greater risks that patients are susceptible to while suffering from arthritis.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (or CDC) in the United States revealed that arthritis patients who are middle-aged or older tend to be more susceptible to falling. In other words, they are more likely to fall and hurt themselves compared to individuals who don't suffer from the condition.
"The good news is that, according to the CDC, incidences of falls and injuries can be significantly reduced by up to a third if individuals follow a fall-prevention program," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.
In the United States, falls are considered to be a leading cause of injury-related illness and death. Falls can result in a wide variety of tragic consequences such as brain injuries, hip fractures, reduction in social and physical activities and deterioration in functional abilities.
There is an estimated 22.7 percent of the population in the U.S. that is suffering from arthritis. This is quite alarming, since these sufferers are adults who are at a great risk for poor neuromuscular function, which typically results in falls.
Kamil E. Barbour, PhD, an epidemiologist in the CDC's Arthritis Program, has stated that arthritis and falls can be a huge problem. Since the condition results in poor neuromuscular function, arthritis patients are at a higher risk for poor balance and walking speed.
The Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report published a study that revealed some shocking findings about arthritis patients and falls. It was found that adults who were suffering from arthritis were nearly 30 percent more likely to experience a fall in a 12 month period, compared to those who don't suffer from the condition.
According to the CDC, falls lead to direct medical costs that reach almost $30 billion per year. However, the good news is that there are fall-prevention programs that can significantly help sufferers reduce their risk for falls. These programs address falls by considering factors such as weakness in the muscles, environmental hazards, poor vision and the effects of medications.
It is believed that the most effective strategy is physical therapy or exercise. This strategy can help reduce falls by 14 to 37 percent and improve balance, gait and lower body strength. Some sufferers also choose to use curcumin supplements to help reduce pain and inflammation around the joints, and allow for better mobility (http://www.amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI).
