(Health-NewsWire.Net, April 10, 2015 ) Chattanooga, TN -- Santulana has been investigating ways to help children with ADHD. ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) is an exceptionally common childhood disorder of the brain. It develops during childhood and can follow through to adulthood. Children with ADHD find it impossible to concentrate on one particular task. They daydream and appear not to listen when given instructions. They fidget constantly, perhaps tapping the desk or foot tapping. ADHD children are also impulsive and don't see the consequences of their actions, such the dangers of running after a ball which has gone into the road.
Researchers have found that the constant fidgeting actually helps children with ADHD concentrate, which is why studies on using a stability ball in the classroom have come up with such positive results. The constant small movements that are needed to keep balance when sitting on a Swiss ball help to use up excess energy and therefore remove the need to constantly fidget.
A paper published in the October 2003 edition of the ‘American Journal of Occupational Therapy' by Shilling et al, concluded that children with ADHD who sat on a stability ball were able to concentrate better, were less disruptive and their language skills improved greatly. A study by the Mayo Clinic in 2007 agreed with these results.
Another paper published in the same journal in August 2011 by Fedewa and Irwin, concluded that the "results of the stability ball intervention increased levels of attention, decreased levels of hyperactivity and increased time on a task. This study provided additional evidence of the benefits of using stability balls in the general education classroom for children who exhibit difficulties with attention and hyperactivity."
