(Health-NewsWire.Net, April 11, 2015 ) Calgary, AB -- A study in which omega-3 fatty acid supplementation significantly improves the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome PMS was conducted as a randomized double-blind controlled trial. In the study, 184 women received 2 grams of omega-3 fatty acids daily for three months. The control group took a placebo daily. The researchers assessed the women for PMS symptom duration and severity at the beginning of the study and after 45 and 90 days of supplementation.
PMS, or premenstrual syndrome, a group of symptoms linked to the menstrual cycle that occur regularly one to two weeks before a woman menstruates. Premenstrual syndrome can affect menstruating women of any age and the effect is different for each woman. The symptoms are: acne, swollen or tender breasts, feeling tired, trouble sleeping, upset stomach, bloating, constipation, or diarrhea, headache or backache, appetite changes or food cravings, joint or muscle pain, trouble with concentration or memory, tension, irritability, mood swings, or crying spells, anxiety or depression. While the symptoms vary from woman to woman, many experience most of them in different severities.
Nutriden, a privately held Nutraceuticals company, wants it's customers to know that a daily dose of Omega 3 fatty acids in its fish oil can minimize your PMS symptoms. The research study found that after 45 days of omega-3 fatty acids supplementation, the severity of depression, anxiety, lack of concentration and bloating and the duration of depression and bloating was significantly lower compared to the placebo group. Even more amazing results were found after 90 days of supplementation, the researchers determined that omega-3 fatty acid supplementation reduced the severity of depression, anxiety, lack of concentration, bloating and nervousness compared to the placebo group. Researchers also found that the duration of symptoms were lower in the omega-3 fatty acid group compared to the control group.
In conclusion, the researches stated, "It appears that omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the psychiatric symptoms of PMS including depression, nervousness, anxiety, and lack of concentration and may also reduce the somatic symptoms of PMS including bloating, headache and breast tenderness. These effects increased by longer duration of treatment."
