(Health-NewsWire.Net, April 12, 2015 ) Westendorf, Tirol -- Researchers at Vanderbilt University are experimenting with an optical laser beam treatment to alleviate the symptoms of jet lag. Mountainbreeze Naturals founder, Helga Riedmann, suggests an easier solution - a bottle of tea tree oil antifungal soap to refresh passengers after an extended flight.
"An antifungal soap helps revive and invigorate," said Riedmann. "It's also a fungicide, antibacterial and antiviral against an array of bugs that passengers may encounter during air travel."
Jet lag is a major problem for travelers, especially those who cross the International Date Line. It disrupts the body's natural circadian rhythm, causing sleep disruptions that lead to fatigue and disturbances in concentration and cognitive functions. The experimental laser treatment would address jet lag by switching the brain's schedule from day to night through alteration of the neurons that govern the body's internal clock.
Technically, the treatment is non-invasive, but deep brain stimulation that's currently used for neurological disorders is considered invasive. The laser would use a sporadic light flashed in the eye and for many bleary-eyed travelers it would be well worth the effort.
The laser remedy has been used on mice successfully, but there's a major impediment. The method has only been effective on mice that have been genetically engineered with a light sensitive protein. The treatment would require passengers to undergo gene therapy for it to be effective.
Researchers have determined that the laser therapy may also be beneficial for individuals with seasonal depression, but there's no definitive proof. Individuals may require from six to nine days to recover from jet lag, depending upon their recuperative powers. While the laser technique would have advantages over consuming coffee or sleeping pills, the treatment is still years away from deployment.
In the meantime, a readily available and effective remedy for travelers is an antifungal soap of tea tree oil.. Mountainbreeze Naturals combines a blend of essential oils from around the world with its tea tree oil for a formula that provides a refreshing body wash and shampoo that helps rejuvenate. It's also effective against the many viral, bacterial and fungal infections which travelers routinely come into contact through airline travel.
