(Health-NewsWire.Net, April 16, 2015 ) Chicago, IL -- The heroin epidemic in Chicago is no well kept secret. The city has been devastated by the opiate drug for the past years, and state officials have finally has enough. Taking a stand against the traditional means of combating addiction- behind bars- state officials are testing out a new heroin treatment pilot program where heroin (and opiate) addicts are given a monthly injection of Vivitrol, according to The News Gazette on April 10th. The article states, "Vivitrol, administered through a once-a-month intramuscular injection, reduces cravings and blocks the pleasure effects of drugs such as morphine, heroin, and other opiates. But at about $1,200 per injection, it's often out of reach for those who need it."
Unfortunately, Vivitrol is costly. 30 heroin addicts will be selected from the drug court system (where nonviolent drug offenders can escape prison if they get addiction treatment) this month to receive the injections. The New Gazette states, "[The Vivitrol program] will be launched through a partnership of Carle Foundation Hospital, the Prairie Center addictions treatment agency and Champagne County drug court." Drug Rehab Chicago is an addiction treatment facility in the bustling city of Chicago providing the entire state drug and alcohol rehabilitation services. The treatment center applauds the new pilot program and asserts much needed research will be gleaned from the effort, ultimately supporting treatment for nonviolent drug uses as opposed to incarceration.
An associate from Drug Rehab Chicago says, "There's been a recent pull towards more, frankly, humane treatment of victims of drug and alcohol addiction. As opposed to treating them as criminals from suffering from a physical and mental addiction, they're finally getting access to the programs they need to help them overcome a deadly disease. The more data we can collect on long term treatment- especially medications like Vivitrol the harder we can fight to ensure victims of addiction aren't being taken advantage of by the system. Essentially, incarceration doesn't work. Period. Addicts need practical programs that will help reintroduce them to society, teaching them how to cope with living without addictive substances. Jail will never do that- it only ostracizes them more."
