Parkinson Disease in a neuro-degenerative Movement Disorder whereby not enough Dopamine is produced in the brain. It is characterized by such symptoms as: rigidity, slowness, freezing, tremors, speech or swallowing problems and eventually some cognitive impairment.
Dr. Cassidy explains that "there are so many people in this area (100,000) who are managing their Parkinson Disease and need support. Often the family caregiver is the spouse who is likely to be in their 70s and 80s and may need help themselves."
Linda Lemonte, Founder and Administrator of Paradise Home Health Care adds; "This is a natural fit for us since we are volunteers of the South Palm Beach County Chapter of the National Parkinson Foundation and lead some of their Support Groups at both the Boca Raton and Boynton Beach YMCAs. We are committed to families dealing with PD, and Alzheimer's disease and offer individuals and families to sign up without having to use a regular schedule, but rather use home care as they need to."
Sherry Picker states, "I try to help people understand that they are not alone in living with this disease. There is a lot of support in this area, be it, Physical Therapy, Support Groups, Organizations, and so forth. It is so important to learn from others who are in the same situation, or at least very similar, as well as to share what you know. A big feature of PD is that no two people have the same disease. There is a lot of research being done and hopes for better medications, treatments and even a cure may be realized in the near future."
Some of the topics to be discussed are: Resources in the community and Government Benefits Disease Symptoms and natural aging process Sharing of information about treatment, medications and research Coping with feelings of frustration, anger, guilt, exhaustion... Providing expert guest speakers Discuss concerns of the group members Planning for the future; financial, legal & residential considerations
The group is free of charge and open to the public. For RSVP, contact Dr. James Cassidy 561-808-7743
Ms. Picker says, "I hope as many family members as possible will attend as Parkinson Disease affects the whole family. The power of the group dynamic is tangible when folks regularly attend. A bond is created and they are able to help each other."
