According to the State of Illinois Health Department statistics, 'more than 30,000 people in Illinois have been diagnosed with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) since 1981. Of that figure, about 53 percent died. The number of Illinois cases is the sixth highest total in the U.S., trailing New York, California, Florida, Texas and New Jersey'.
They continued their report to note that Illinois 'ranked 9th among the 50 states in chlamydial infections with 526.1 per 100,000 persons and ranked 10th among the 50 states in gonorrheal infections with 141 per 100,000 persons.
Though sex education and disease preventions are taught in Illinois schools, among high-school students in Illinois in 2013, it was reported that 44.5% engaged in sexual intercourse' with '42.3% not using a condom' thus opening themselves to the risks of contracting a sexually transmitted disease at an early age.
In 2012, Melinda Cox, the Director of Public Health for Stephenson County noted STDs were on the rise. "Stephenson County has seen increases in the most common STDs, Chlamydia and gonorrhea," she noted. "In 2010, there were 192 positive Chlamydia cases in the county, and 48 gonorrhea cases. In 2011, the number of Chlamydia cases rose to 208, and the number of gonorrhea cases increased to 69."
