(Health-NewsWire.Net, April 27, 2015 ) Chicago, IL -- Illinois is deliberating on a bill, which has passed the House, proposing to give underage drinkers amnesty in the event they call 911 for medical help during a drinking-related emergency, according to the Chicago Tribune on March 13th. The bill is presented to help allay avoidable deaths among teens from alcohol poisoning. State Rep. Scott Drury is quoted by the Chicago Tribune, "This legislation should not be viewed as being soft on crime, because it's not. I just think there's a difference between being soft on crime and being smart on policy, . . . and the public policy is that we don't want kids to die. The bill only grants lawful amnesty to underage drinkers who call 911 of help, and the victim of the 911 call. All underage drinkers involved must fully cooperate with officers and medical professionals to be granted amnesty. The bill has passed the House this month (April of 2015), and is presently in the Senate for deliberation.
"Nobody should die from alcohol poisoning, it's entirely preventable. Teenagers in particular, who are vulnerable to alcohol related emergencies and disorders, should be able to contact 911 without the fear of being arrested." Says a medical associate from Drug Rehab Chicago.
Drug Rehab Chicago is a drug and alcohol rehab center in Chicago dedicated to helping victims of drug and alcohol use disorders recover from untreated addiction. The medical professions from the addiction treatment center stress the necessity of acting upon substance abuse as soon as it manifests, "Teenagers and young adults are typically more difficult to rehabilitate. Catching substance abuse, and the beginning stages of addiction, are critical to address before the habits become innate and set the tone for the rest of their lives," says a medical associate from Drug Rehab Chicago.
The drug and alcohol rehab center supports legislation promoting the safety of those engaged in substance use, in favor of pursuing drug and alcohol addiction treatment over incarceration. An associate comments, "Those who are afflicted by the disease of addiction are suffering from a mental and physical illness. Illnesses are not cured in prison, but are perpetuated, and grow worse in environments which are not conducive to healing. People get trapped in the lifestyle of abusing addictive substances, going to jail, and then doing it all over again. We need to provide the means for people in danger of addiction to reach out without fear of reprisal."
