(Health-NewsWire.Net, April 22, 2015 ) Orlando, FL -- There is a wide variety of medical conditions these days and people affected by them are resorting to different treatment options. Patients with arthritic conditions, for instance, often resort to surgery to achieve pain relief and improve the quality of their life.
A study revealed that millions of people in the United States are living with hip and knee implants. However, even if all of them are benefiting from surgery, they are still going to need ongoing care as they age.
At the annual conference of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Mayo Clinic researchers presented a study that found there were more than 7 million Americans who have had knee or hip replacement surgeries. This includes 2.5 million total hip replacements (THR) and 4.7 million total knee replacements (TKR). They explained that the study aimed to highlight the compelling need to have the U.S. heathcare system prepare for the continuous care that patients are likely to need.
"Previous studies revealed that there were about 1 million new total hip and knee replacements performed in the United States each year. This number is expected to grow, but now we at least have a rough idea how many individuals have one of these prosthetic devices," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson Michelle O'Sullivan.
Daniel Berry, MD, a professor of orthopaedics at Mayo Clinic and the study's senior author, stated that the numbers actually show there are 1.5 times as many individuals in the U.S. who have had a joint replacement as have had heart failure. He also added that the prevalence of joint replacement surgeries is on the same level as for coronary heart disease and much higher than for stroke.
Joanna M. Jordan, MD, the director of the Thurston Arthritis Research Center at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has conducted population studies on osteoarthritis and race. She believes that many patients who resorted to implants due to osteoarthritis also have other chronic conditions. Osteoarthritis is often the most common reason why people have joint replacement surgery and these people are typically the ones that will need medical care in the future.
Joint replacement surgeries may last for a long time but patients sometimes encounter problems such as dislocation, loosening or infection of the implant. A second surgery, or revision, may then need to be done, and it may need to be done more than once. This is something for which the healthcare system needs to be prepared.
There are many things that people can do to save themselves from the need for implants and surgeries. They can make some dietary and lifestyle changes, and they may also benefit from the use of supplements such as curcumin to improve their joint health (www.amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI/).
