(Health-NewsWire.Net, April 23, 2015 ) Titusville, FL -- Dental visits usually involve a dental procedure that would require application of local anesthesia by injection. Though children are assured that the procedure itself will not hurt because anesthesia will be applied, the injection itself is what they fear the most. At an early age, children can develop needle phobia or trypanophobia. Application of electronic dental anesthesia (EDA) through TENS unit pads can help kids overcome this fear and improve oral health.
Syrtenty® TENS unit replacement pads come in all shapes and sizes, including 1-inch round electrode pads that would cover the target areas on the cheeks and jaws perfectly. With proper use, Syrtenty® TENS unit pads are also proven not to irritate even children's sensitive skin.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), tooth decay affects more more than 24% of children between 2 and 5 years, and 50% of Americans aged 12 to 15 years. Between 2007 and 2010, 15.6% of children have untreated dental caries. By the time they reach 65 years, these children would have no more teeth left.
Needle phobia has a lot of disadvantages especially among children. Those who have this kind of extreme fear of needles try to avoid medical treatments, putting them more at risk to their medical condition as time passes by. For instance, kids who needs tooth extraction or restoration might avoid going to the dentist because of their fear of getting local anesthesia by injection.
To address this issue, dentists thought of using EDA instead of injecting local anesthesia. In a study conducted by Lodaya et al., young patients aged 6 to 12 underwent tooth extraction, pulpectomy or pulp therapy, and stainless steel crown restoration under electronic dental anesthesia (EDA) using a TENS unit and small electrode pads. Results showed that EDA can be used in extracting wobbly teeth; it does not provide complete anesthesia in pulpectomy procedures; and EDA was most effective in stainless steel crown restoration. In addition, Lodaya et al. noted, " It has been shown that EDA is a viable mode of pain control during some dental procedures in pediatric dentistry."
Lodaya's young patients were more cooperative without the needles. Moreover, according to an article in the website "Intelligent Dental," EDA has the following advantages: no need for needles and other drugs, no numbing effect at the end of the dental procedure (feeling of having thick lips), and the analgesic effect lasts longer. Syrtenty® small electrode pads would help in the implementation of EDA among children.
