Local emergency departments have been taking initiative to pick up some of the slack, while some hospitals are paying out of pocket to help patients attain safety.
Between September 2014 and March 2015, around 1,875 individuals visited Boston Medical Center's emergency room seeking assistance with starting on a path to recovery. Majority of the individuals seeking help were suffering from issues with opiates and alcohol. 46 percent of these individuals were turned away due to lack of available beds.
In some cases patients are referred to other addiction treatment programs if a bed is available in facility in the surrounding areas. In efforts to help prevent turning those in need away, some members of Project ASSERT pay out of pocket to get these patients to another treatment facility.
Dr. Edward Bernstein an emergency physician at Boston Medical Center is hopeful that additional beds will become available to help those in need. Bernstein stated "I'm hoping to see more access to beds. If 46 percent of people who really want help can't get it, that's pretty serious."
