(Health-NewsWire.Net, April 27, 2015 ) Boston, MA.-- The state police in Massachusetts have reported over 200 suspected heroin overdose deaths since the start of 2015. According to the statistics provided by Massachusetts state police, there have been around 70 suspected heroin overdose deaths monthly in the months of January, February, and March.
The statistics for suspected heroin overdose deaths in March includes 54 men and 18 women, the median age of these individuals was 36 years old.
The 217 heroin overdose deaths recorded are a total from all regions within the state of Massachusetts, excluding Boston, Worcester, and Springfield. Therefore the total number of heroin overdose deaths could be significantly higher if the totals from those 3 cities were calculated.
Governor Charlie Baker has developed a task force comprised of 17 members to address the state's crisis involving heroin and prescription drug abuse.
The state police have also gotten involved in taking initiative to combat against the growing heroin epidemic in Massachusetts. As of December, state police have began the compilation of a detailed database on suspected overdoses in the state. Officials are hopeful that the intricate data they collect will help identify trends among the deaths. Identifying these trends could potentially lead investigators to the source of distribution for these illegal drugs.
The Department of Public health reported a total of 978 opioid related overdose deaths in Massachusetts for the year 2013. With the amount of overdose deaths that have already occurred this year, it's possible that this years rate will be just as high as in the year 2013.
"Hopefully the public health emergency declaration will help bring awareness to the growing heroin epidemic in Massachusetts. Heroin has been killing people all across the world for years, this epidemic must come to an end." comments Drug and Alcohol rehab Boston medical associate.
