(Health-NewsWire.Net, May 06, 2015 ) Orlando, FL -- Knee osteoarthritis is one of the arthritic conditions that are affecting millions of people from around the world. There are many treatment options that patients use to achieve pain relief and there are also remedies that are capturing the interest of researchers and are potentially helpful for patients.
A study investigated how neuromuscular electrical stimulation affects knee osteoarthritis. TENS, or transcutaneous electrical stimulation, was a very popular treatment for pain relief. Today, electrical stimulation already involves NMES, or neuromuscular electrical stimulation. A number of studies in the past years have found that NMES was an effective electrical knee treatment, especially for the knee osteoarthritis symptoms.
The Clinical Rheumatology published a 2008 study that involved a group of 50 female patients diagnosed with osteoarthritis of the knee. It was found that those who engaged in a four-week program of electrical stimulation experienced improvement in physical function and relief from stiffness and pain in the same way as those who engaged in a four-week exercise program.
"According to the researchers, electrical stimulation is a great option for knee osteoarthritis treatment, especially for individuals who are unable to engage in exercise programs," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.
There were two studies conducted in Baltimore and they documented the efficiency of electrical stimulation. It was found that in older patients with knee osteoarthritis, electrical stimulation was effective in reducing knee pain and increasing quadricep muscle strength. It was also found that the NMES group experienced short-term relief.
Another recent study was conducted in the United States involving 48 men and 109 women who suffered from moderate-to-severe knee osteoarthritis. They were made to wear an FDA-approved electric stimulation device for about six to ten hours daily.
It was found that 62 percent of the subjects who used the electrical stimulation device experienced less of a need for surgery. As a matter of fact, they postponed their knee joint replacement for four years. Only seven percent of those who did not use the device experienced the benefit.
There are many known remedies nowadays that may be very effective in providing pain relief among knee osteoarthritis patients. Some use drugs while others, who don't want to experience side effects, rely on natural supplements.
Natural supplements such as glucosamine are widely used among arthritis patients and are believed to be an effective and safe treatment option for arthritis sufferers. In fact, many of the patients who used the natural remedy claimed that they have indeed experienced significant pain relief and improved mobility (http://amazon.com/Glucosamine-Sulfate-Chondroitin-Supplement-Turmeric/product-reviews/B00DUMO9X4/).
