(Health-NewsWire.Net, May 11, 2015 ) Pittsburgh, PA -- After a stint of a reported 12 overdoses in Pittsburgh that claimed the lives of two people, the Justice Department deemed Pittsburgh's top prosecutor David Hickton co-chair of the national Heroin Task Force.
U.S. Attorney David Hickton will lead the group alongside Mary Lou Leary, the Deputy Director for State, Local, and Tribal Affairs at the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy.
Hickton believes that a more holistic approach should be utilized in treating substance abuse and addiction. In regards to his thoughts on the growing heroin epidemic, Hickton stated "The problem of opioid abuse cannot be solved by prosecution alone. We can't incarcerate our way out of this problem."
Hickton began his fight against the heroin epidemic when he assembled his U.S. Attorneys Working Group on addiction in 2014. Hickton created this group partially due to a spike of heroin overdoses that killed about 22 people in Pittsburgh in January 2014. According to federal statistics, heroin and other licit drugs with similar effects to opioids, are beginning to be abused at a continuously increasing rate. Hickton is hopeful that the strategies developed by his group will be implemented nationwide.
The Heroin Task Force is just one of the few initiatives being taken to combat against the heroin epidemic. Currently, officers and paramedics are using naloxone to treat heroin overdose victims. Thus far it has helped police save multiple lives.
An associate from Drug Rehab Pittsburgh comments "It's very admirable that the state has developed this Heroin Task Force. The use of heroin is running rampant through our city and killing numerous people. Now is definitely the time to take initiative in combating against the heroin epidemic not only in Pittsburgh, but nationwide. There should be less people dying and being criminalized for heroin use, and more people need being treated for their heroin use. I believe that this task force will help raise awareness as well as lower heroin use and heroin related deaths."
