(Health-NewsWire.Net, May 20, 2015 ) New York, NY -- According to a recent article published by CBS New York Local News on May 3rd, 2015 , it is fairly easy for underage teens to get their hands on alcohol. A recent investigation by New York City Department of Health discovered that underage buyers were easily able to purchase alcohol within the city's pharmacies, grocery stores, and liquor stores.
The health department released the shocking results of their undercover investigation which was conducted by the state liquor authority last year in 2014, between the months of April and September.
During the investigation a host of underage decoys were sent out into 911 stores all throughout the five boroughs within the city. According to the health department, the underage decoys were surprisingly able to obtain alcohol from 58 percent of the 911 stores.
Assistant Commissioner of New York City's Department of Health Dr. Hillary Kunis told WCBS Newsradio 880 that the department made the decision to conduct this investigation in relation to the continuous rise of underage drinking in New York City. Kunis stated "What brought it on was our concern that rates of binge drinking and drinking among underage people in New York City has continued to be an issue."
The health department has devised a plan to send a letter to all stores holding a liquor license in the city. The letter's message is intended to be a reminder for checking IDs, as well as to remind businesses that their employees should be trained in a manner which prevents them from selling alcohol to underage buyers.
As a result of the findings that the health department discovered from this investigation, the department plans to sponsor training sessions to help businesses avoid selling alcohol to underage buyers. Kunis also stated that the department plans to release a public service announcement as a means to remind parents that they can report businesses which sell alcohol to underage buyers.
An associate from Drug and Alcohol Rehab New York comments "It's definitely a shock to see that over half of the stores in our city are selling alcohol to underage buyers. However, it's great that this investigation was conducted in order to shed light on this issue. I am hopeful that the results of this investigation will bring about a significant decline in underage drinking. Also in addition to encouraging parents to report businesses that sell alcohol to underage buyers, I also encourage parents to get help for their children if they believe there's a drinking problem present or developing. Unfortunately alcoholism and alcohol abuse can start at a very young age."
