(Health-NewsWire.Net, May 29, 2015 ) Chicago, IL -- Powdered alcohol, also known as "Palcohol", has been approved by the federal government in early 2015. Illinois lawmakers have come to an agreement for proposing to ban powdered alcohol before it's due to hit the shelves this summer. The proposed bill has been approved by the House and passed by senate, however it still requires the state governor's signature to become a law.
The bill will classify powdered alcohol as any powdered or crystalline substance which contains alcohol, commonly found in the form of dehydrated vodka or rum.
Although the creators of Palcohol say the alcohol powder is intended to appeal to backpackers and individuals looking for a lightweight form of liquor. many lawmakers believe that the powder imposes danger and will be misused. State legislators believe that powdered alcohol has the potential to harm individuals and their proposal to ban the substance is a proactive measure for preventing it. Lawmakers argue that this substance can easily be used to spike an unknowing person's food or drink. It is also projected that this powder will make it easier for people to overdose on the powder.
According to the National Conference of State Legislators, 39 states currently have pending bills for the ban of powdered alcohol. Illinois is among at least four other states that currently have a proposal to ban powdered alcohol on their books.
If the bill is in fact passed, penalties for violating the new law could result in jail time for less than a year, up to two years of probation, or a fine that could total as much as $2,500. Offenders could also face one to three years in prison. However, the biggest question is will this bill actually be enforced?
A medical associate from Drug Rehab Chicago comments on the proposed bill. "I would agree with the state legislators that powdered alcohol imposes a great threat. There are already people who are unknowingly being drugged and poisoned, products like Palcohol will only make it easier to do so. I am hopeful that if the bill is passed that the law is strictly enforced. It is a must that we put our best foot forward in trying to bring a decline in substance abuse, especially alcohol abuse.
