(Health-NewsWire.Net, May 27, 2015 ) Orlando, FL -- Pain is one of the reasons why being an arthritis patient is really difficult. Albeit pain is common, not all sufferers know exactly how to rate their pain, especially when their doctor asks them. The good news is that there is a method that can help patients learn more about pain.
A study showed that brain imaging can confirm the severity of pain. This could be very beneficial to patients, especially when identifying the scale of pain they suffer from on a daily basis. When they are asked by their health care provider, they can properly rate themselves on a pain scale.
The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences published a study that found the processing of pain sensations in the brain can be different, and this means that there are some people who are more sensitive to pain than others. The study involved 17 healthy subjects, both men and women, who wore a computer-controlled heat stimulator on their leg. The device heated to about 120 degrees Fahrenheit and the subjects were asked to rate their pain using the scale of 1 to 10.
"The reactions actually varied. The researchers observed the brain activity of the participants using MRI, or the magnetic resonance imaging," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.
All of the participants experienced similar amounts of activity in the thalamus when they experienced pain. The thalamus is the part of the brain that sends pain signals from the spinal cord to other regions of the brain. It was also found that those who experienced greater pain experienced more activity in the brain portions that perceive the pain location and interpret unpleasant feelings.
The results of brain imaging actually provide doctors with confidence about the pain reports of their patients. Researchers are hoping that findings would encourage more patients to try techniques that can help them with pain and achieve better pain management.
Roger Coghill, PhD, Forest University School of Medicine's professor of neurobiology and anatomy, stated that there has not been any objective evidence that confirms the presence of individual differences in pain sensitivity. He also added it is possible that the spinal cord sends pain messages in the same way, but the processing can vary depending on factors such as the emotional state, past experiences with pain and expectations about pain of the patient.
Arthritis sufferers resort to a wide variety of treatments just to achieve pain relief and improve the quality of their life. In addition to taking drugs, there are those who also use natural alternatives such as glucosamine supplements (amazon.com/Glucosamine-Sulfate-Chondroitin-Supplement-Turmeric/dp/B00DUMO9X4).
