(Health-NewsWire.Net, May 29, 2015 ) Orlando, FL -- Records show that 30 percent of individuals who suffer from psoriasis will also develop psoriatic arthritis. It can also be the other way around. However, it seems that having either or both of the conditions is also a risk factor for another ailment.
Research investigates the link in between increased gout risk and psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. Both conditions are often believed to be caused by the immune system. Patients often experience symptoms such as fatigue, sausage-like swelling of the toes and fingers, back and neck pain and painful and swollen joints.
The Annals of the Rhuematic Diseases recently published a study online that found people who suffer from psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis are more susceptible to gout, which is considered a painful form of inflammatory arthritis. Patients are more likely to suffer from gout compared to individuals who don't have the conditions.
"Psoriasis, as an inflammatory condition, causes the skin cells to rapidly build up, which normally results in red, thick skin that's overlaid with scales or silvery patches," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.
Joseph Merola, co-director of the Center for Skin and Related Muscoloskeletal Diseases at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, stated that there were many individuals who suffered from inflammatory arthritis who also had gout. He also noted that psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis and gout were linked to alarmingly high blood levels of uric acid. Gout often takes place when there is an excessive buildup of uric acid in the joints and tissue.
According to The Arthritis Foundation, the buildup often takes place in the joints in the big toe and forms needle-like crystals that also cause episodes of intense swelling and pain. When this is left untreated, it can result in chronic gout and joint damage.
Jasvinder Singh, M.D., a rheumatologist and the University of Alabama's associate professor in the division of clinical immunology, believed in the link in between the high skin cell turnover in psoriasis and gout. However, he also added that patients only need to be aware of the high risk of gout in psoriasis as it allows them to use some preventive strategies such as lifestyle and dietary changes.
It has always been known that having healthy food and beverage preferences as well as engaging in regular exercise are great ways to improve immunity against a wide variety of diseases. Many arthritis sufferers use natural alternatives such as glucosamine supplements to achieve significant pain relief. There were even those claimed that they have experienced improved mobility by using natural alternatives (http://www.amazon.com/Glucosamine-Sulfate-Chondroitin-Supplement-Turmeric/dp/B00DUMO9X4).
