(Health-NewsWire.Net, May 31, 2015 ) San Francisco, CA -- Having a good workout starts before a routine is started. Warm-ups and stretches should be done before one grabs a barbell to make an athlete perform effectively. The right shoulder stretches are beneficial especially for those who do snatches, muscle-ups, and push-ups, to name a few. Athletes are not the only ones who can benefit from shoulder stretches. People who suffer from shoulder pain brought about by hunching over a desk the whole day can do stretches to alleviate pain. WOD Nation coach Barry Lavis shows the proper way to stretch the shoulders using the WOD Nation resistance band.
Barry Lavis is a CrossFit Lever 1 Certified Trainer, CrosFit Gymnastics Trainer Certified, CrossFit Football Certified, and a certified USAW Olympic Weightlifting coach. With that kind of experience and knowledge, he knows the importance of stretching for healthy shoulders. He demonstrates stretching using a WOD Nation resistance band to warm up and open the shoulders prior to training.
Lavis uses a light resistance band, a red WOD Nation exercise band. WOD Nation bands come in five resistance levels. They can be used singly or in combination. Shoulder stretches are essentially mobility exercises rather than strength ones and do not need a heavy band.
In this video, the proper shoulder stretch is demonstrated by Lavis. His reminder is to let the resistance band do the work while the athlete relaxes. The stretch is easy and it takes only a few minutes to accomplish. There is no reason that stretches should be ignored when it brings a lot of benefits but there are many people who forgo them with the mistaken belief that stretches will take too much energy and leave them fatigued. Here are benefits that result from properly-done shoulder stretches.
Increase range of motion. Stretches releases the rigidity of muscles. If muscles are rigid or tense, mobility is hampered. Warm up the muscles. Muscles should be warmed up in preparation for physical exertion. Improve muscle tone. Stretching makes the muscles stronger and improves tone. Relieve stress. Stretching has an oxygenating effect and minimizes stress that tightens the muscles. Recuperate and prevent injury. Stretching decompresses the back and joints which is helpful in preventing injury. It also helps in rehabilitation.
It could be seen from Barry Lavis' video that stretching the shoulders with the WOD Nation resistance band is easy and quick. A few minutes of proper stretching results to strong and healthy shoulders.
