(Health-NewsWire.Net, June 10, 2015 ) Chicago, IL -- According to the Chicago Tribune, the soon to open Taco Bell location in the Wicker Park neighborhood of Chicago will begin serving alcoholic beverages to it's customers. this will be the first Taco Bell in the United States to serve alcohol. A spokesperson for the brand confirmed that the location will serve beer, wine, and boozy "freezes".
The location has no intentions on serving alcohol in to-go cups. Only eat-in customers will have the privilege to be served alcoholic beverages. As a means to take extra precaution, alcoholic beverages will be served in a cup which differentiates it from non-alcoholic beverages, so employees can spot anyone trying to leave the premises with alcohol.
Taco Bell also plans to introduce its new store design at the soon to open location. The interior of the restaurant will be similar to those of Taco Bell's locations in Tokyo, Seoul, and the United Kingdom, which also serve alcohol. The projected design for the location will be comprised of features including exposed brick walls, murals, communal tables accompanied by wooden stools, and accent colors such as bright purple and teal.
It has not yet been confirmed at which hours the alcohol will be served at this Chicago Taco Bell location.
An associate from Drug Rehab Chicago comments "I applaud Taco Bell for trying to make its brand more marketable, however I don't agree fast food restaurants should sell alcohol. Generally, high school aged teens and young adults are the one's who are working the registers and drive thru windows at fast food restaurants. By selling alcoholic beverages in fast food restaurants such as Taco Bell, not only would it be easy for these underage teens to get their hands on alcohol, it'd also make it easier for them to serve alcohol to their underage friends. It won't be difficult for an underage worker to spike their underage friends drink with alcohol, or for the employee to consume the alcohol themselves. Although I have read that they are planning to take precautionary steps to ensure that alcoholic beverages are consumed only inside of the restaurant, there are so many ways to sneak around the rules they are trying to put in place. Who's to say people won't put alcoholic beverages in the cups designated for non-alcoholic beverages or turn a blind eye to someone leaving the store with an alcoholic beverage? I believe that fast food restaurants serving alcohol will only increase the rates of underage drinking and promote easy access to alcohol."
