Once in the clinic, the dentist may also decide to use nitrous oxide sedation, which is popularly known as laughing gas. "The nitrous oxide reduces the pain, and it also reduces the anxiety the patient feels inside the clinic," explains Dr. Gorrell. "Usually, we bolster its effects by also using a local anesthetic."
