(Health-NewsWire.Net, June 09, 2015 ) Orlando, FL -- Pain is one of the things that is causing too much suffering for many arthritis patients. As a matter of fact, there are sufferers who have become incapable of working, doing daily chores and enjoying their life because of the condition. However, it seems that there is good news for arthritis patients.
The Arthritis Foundation revealed that there is a pathway to pain relief for arthritis patients. Arthritis patients, especially those with osteoarthritis, are bound to live their life in pain. What makes it even worse is that medications on the market today do not provide therapeutic benefits for all patients.
"NSAIDs are believed to reduce only about 30 percent of pain and make some osteoarthritis treatment options inadequate. The combination of NSAIDs and opioids, on the other hand, caused serious side effects such as heart and kidney problems, ulcers and drowsiness," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.
Researchers investigated the new methods of treating osteoarthritis with the use of biologic medications that were similar to drugs used for rheumatoid arthritis. There was a class of drugs known as the anti-NGFs that was known to attack chronic pain by hindering pain signals from reaching the brain. This medication was also tested in treating conditions such as nerve damage caused by cancer pain, diabetes and osteoarthritis.
Tanezumad is one of the anti-NGFs that was being studied, and it was an antibody that was designed to block the nerve growth factor or NGF, which served as the main control switch for pain. Albeit NGF aids in nerve cell growth and division, it also has some disadvantages. For instance, in the inflammatory environment of an arthritic joint, NGF goads the immune cells into unnecessarily overreacting to the inflammation.
"When this happens, the pain messages can continue reaching the brain and this normally makes the condition chronic, which cannot be easily stopped," added O'Sullivan.
Nancy Lane, M.D., Univeristy of California-Davis arthritis expert, believes that the main idea is to get more pain relief without experiencing some side effects. Tanezumab works in the same way as anti-tumor necrosis factor therapies by blocking NGF. These therapies also block pathways that often lead to inflammation among rheumatoid arthritis patients.
This is good news for individuals who are suffering from arthritic conditions. Many arthritis sufferers avoid using NSAIDs because of the side effects associated with their use. There are even those who use glucosamine supplements as they are believed to be safer and more effective than drugs (www.amazon.com/Glucosamine-Sulfate-Chondroitin-Supplement-Turmeric/dp/B00DUMO9X4).
