(Health-NewsWire.Net, June 12, 2015 ) Charlotte, NC -- North Carolina authorities have announced a roundup of about 28 suspects of a prescription pill drug ring in Bertie and Hertford counties.
This drug bust was apart of North Carolina's statewide "Take as Directed" initiative, which was created for undercover operations to identify persons who illegally sell prescription drugs. This recent round up is the third one that has been executed since the initiative originally launched.
Bertie County Sheriff John Holley believes the initiative has been a success based off of the number of illegal dealers who were arrested within a short span of time.
In a recent press conference, Special Agent in Charge Donnie Varnell, of the State Bureau of Investigation's (SBI) Diversion and Environmental Crimes Unit shared his sentiments in regards to the operation. Varnell says that there are more roundups to come, however the most recent roundup had been unusual because the potential dealers had reached out directly to the buyers. Those buyers just so happened to be undercover investigators.
"Many of the sellers started contacting us to sell to us, which is not unheard of, but is not the most common thing that happens in most drug deals. So, we were quickly contacted by potential sellers," said Varnell in the press conference.
Currently the state of North Carolina is being faced with the epidemic of prescription drug abuse. According to The Centers for Disease Control cites prescription drug abuse as the number one drug problem in the nation. Special Agent Varnell added that about 1,100 North Carolina citizens are lost to unintentional overdoses.
Both Bertie and Hartford counties local sheriff's offices had been battling against the epidemic on their own in their respective counties. However, once the two county's joined forces with state authorities they were able to seize over $8000 worth of prescription opiate pills within 90 days.
Authorities have acknowledged the most recent roundup citing the arrests as "just the tip of the iceberg." However, they're excited about their successful beginnings in the long term fight against prescription drug abuse in North Carolina.
A medical associate from Drug and Alcohol Rehab Charlotte commented "I am truly amazed at the success of the "Take as Directed" campaign. It is great to see some results in the fight against prescription drug abuse here in North Carolina. Sadly, a vast majority of the patients we treat at our drug rehab in Charlotte, nc are victims of prescription drug abuse. I am very hopeful that authorities will continue to bust people who are illegally selling prescription drugs, and that we will see a significant decline in cases of prescription drug abuse in North Carolina."
