(Health-NewsWire.Net, June 12, 2015 ) Dallas, TX -- House Bill 11 had been first introduced by legislators in 2014, the bill had been proposed as means to tighten border security in order to fight against drug and human trafficking. Most recently Governor Greg Abbot has signed his approval on the bill with the intentions to enhance border control. The multimillion-dollar border security bill will help boost the ranks of state police, increase technology and establish multiple intelligence operations units on the border of Mexico and Texas.
According to the Texas Tribune, the bill has an estimated cost of $310 million dollars and is a component of an $800 million border security initiative.
"HB 11 [House Bill 11]... will accelerate DPS's hiring of 250 additional troopers for the border region, provide additional training and equipment along the border and give prosecutors additional tools necessary to crack down on criminal cartel enterprises involved in human and drug smuggling," Abbot said in an interview.
Abbott also explained that Texas leaders cannot continue to wait around and pretend as if drug cartels and transnational gangs operating in Mexico are not posing a huge threat, and that the U.S. government is not adequately securing the border.
Annually, the border Texas-Mexico border is illegally crossed by thousands of illegal immigrants.A study conducted by Pew Research Center in July 2014 found that close to 11.7 million illegal immigrants are currently residents of the United States, 50 percent of those immigrants migrated from Mexico.
An associate from Drug and Alcohol Rehab Dallas comments "Although some will argue that the money for this bill should be used elsewhere, I think this bill serves a great purpose. Many people tend to overlook the problem of the nationwide drug abuse epidemic we are currently being faced with. A significant percentage of these drugs are being smuggled through the border. I am a firm believer that by increasing border security that it would help significantly decline the amount of drugs being smuggled into our country.
