(Health-NewsWire.Net, June 15, 2015 ) Chicago, IL -- According to reports from The (Decatur) Herald & Review, Mount Zion's school board has approved a new policy to randomly drug test students involved in certain extracurricular activities. The policy states that an student who participates in sports, clubs, dances, graduation or with driving or parking privileges on the school grounds have to consent to being randomly drug tested. Students will now be required to sign a consent form within 10 days of enrolling.
Students will be selected at random to be administered a urinalysis test to detect for traces of alcohol or drugs, marijuana particularly. The tests will be administered and conducted by clinical specialists.
Mount Zion High School Assistant Principal Mike Mose says that the test will cost anywhere between $25 to $50 per test. The total cost will be determined upon deciding how many of the 750 students enrolled will be tested. Also, the drug testing program will not come at any additional costs for the students or their parents.
The new policy has been set in place to help crack down on the growing epidemic of drug and alcohol use among teens across the nation. Although Mount Zion, a central Illinois high school have just adopted the random drug testing policy, schools throughout southern Illinois have implemented similar policies for about a decade.
Benton Consolidated High school in Benton, Illinois is one of the several southern Illinois hih schools which requires students to undergo random drug testing, according to Principal Mark Miller. "We randomly test all of our kids," Miller said. "Our parents are by and large most supportive." Miller also shared that the policy is set in place as a means too hold students accountable and keep them safe.
The policy will prohibit students who test positive for drugs or alcohol from participating in any extracurricular activities. In addition, parents are notified and students will be offered resources for their drug and/or alcohol use.
An associate from Drug Rehab Chicago comments "I am hopeful that the entire state of Illinois will adopt this policy, especially in Chicago. I believe this is a great measure to help create a decline in drug and alcohol use among high school students. This policy can also help determine which students are using drugs and alcohol, and notify school officials of students who are need of attention for drug and/or alcohol use. I think it's a great idea and I am hopeful that it will help significantly decrease the use of addictive substances among high school students."
