(Health-NewsWire.Net, June 15, 2015 ) West Palm Beach, FL -- According to CBS News, authorities claim that the pilot smelled of alcohol and 'was flushed and sweating" after the plane he had been flying crashed into a ground level communications tower at Melbourne International Airport.
Christopher Hall, 57, of Satellite Beach, fl has been charged with reckless operation of a vessel and child abuse without harm, according to reports. Hall had been planning to take his 10-year old son, who was also on board, to an aviation museum in Dayton, Ohio. Air traffic control reported hearing screams of a young child on board of the plane during the incident.
A police report revealed that air traffic control had informed Hall his flight plan to Ohio was expired and instructed him to return to his hanger. Hall allegedly failed to comply with the instructions he was given and crashed into the tower as he was about to takeoff . An air traffic controller told police that Hall's speech was also slurred during the encounter which raised red flags.
When police officer searched the plane they discovered a half-empty bottle of cognac and a water bottle containing a clear liquid which smelled of alcohol.
Hall nor his son were harmed in the incident, however reports say the young boy was "shaken up" and was being put in the custody of a family friend.
Hall's wife, who happened to be vacationing in Hawaii at the time, she said her husband had a drinking problem and she was "not surprised" by the incident. "He has been known to drink alcohol in the morning prior to flying," the wife told authorities. Federal guideline prohibit pilots from operating aircraft within eight hours of consuming any alcoholic beverages.
The incident is currently being investigated by the Federal Aviation Association and law enforcement officers are currently investigating the incident.
An associate from West Palm Beach Drug Rehab comments "Unfortunately in today's society we have a lot of people who are high functioning alcoholics and drug addicts. Mr. Hall is not the first employee to be drunk on the job, this is not uncommon but it needs to stop. When friends, family, and coworkers are aware of a loved one's drinking problem, it is important to encourage them to seek help. If you know someone who is drinking before or at work, assist them with getting the treatment they need, it could help save lives. You have to speak up."
