(Health-NewsWire.Net, June 18, 2015 ) Dunblane, Perthshire -- Hehir, of In & Out Health, a qualified TCM acupuncturist by profession, believes self-massaging acupressure points when IBS symptoms begin can help reduce the symptoms and speed recovery from the episode of pain and discomfort. She adds there is growing evidence in this respect, supported by the Touch Research Institute.
Hehir says that the self massage process can be made easier with the use of In & Out Health's Mini Instant Massager on Amazon. Hehir says the vibration action travels deep within the body to relax the intestinal muscles and promote the free flow of food through the intestinal passageway. The massager's flexible neck enables pressure to be applied on the different points, whilst still gaining the benefit from in other areas. More information provided below.
What is IBS? Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder that affects the large intestine (colon). It is a chronic condition requiring long term management. Signs and symptoms include cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, diarrhoea and constipation.
Only a small number of people with irritable bowel syndrome have severe signs and symptoms. Some people can control their symptoms by managing diet, lifestyle and stress. Others will need medication and counselling.
Even though signs and symptoms are uncomfortable, IBS does not cause changes in bowel tissue or increase the likelihood of colorectal cancer— unlike ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, which are forms of inflammatory bowel disease.
Causes: It's not really known what causes IBS, but a variety of factors play a role. The muscle layers in the walls of the intestines contract and relax in a coordinated rhythm as they move food down through the intestinal track. When one is suffering from IBS the muscle contractions may be stronger and last longer than normal, causing the symptoms previously mentioned. Or the opposite may occur, with the intestinal contractions being weakened, slowing food passage resulting in hard, dry stools.
Poorly coordinated signals between the brain and the intestines can make the body overreact to the changes that normally occur in the digestive process with greater than normal discomfort being felt when the abdomen stretches from gas or stool.
Common triggers include:
Food allergy or intolerance to certain types of food, which can include — chocolate, spices, fats, fruits, beans, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, milk, carbonated beverages and alcohol to name a few.
Stress - While stress may aggravate symptoms, it doesn't cause them. People with IBS find that their signs and symptoms are worse or more frequent during periods of increased stress,
Hormones - Women are twice as likely to have IBS and find the signs and symptoms are worse during or around their menstrual cycle. Therefore researchers believe that hormonal changes play a role in this condition.
Lifestyle and Home Remedies In many cases, changing the diet and lifestyle can provide relief from IBS. The goal is to find long-term, not temporary, solutions: -Experiment with Fibre, slowly increasing it over a number of weeks. -Avoid problem foods and drinks. If lactose intolerant try substituting dairy milk with goats milk or yogurt -Eat small amounts regularly throughout the day. -Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day. -Alternative treatments that can be used to relieve the symptoms include massage. Specific massage movements and massage on pressure points can be used to stimulate sluggish digestion, to relax abdominal muscles or to relieve bloating. Massage on acupressure points can also help to stimulate the colon. "Some studies have shown that regular abdominal massage reduced gastrointestinal symptoms with regard to constipation and abdominal pain, and resulted in an increased number of bowel movements, although it may take up to two weeks to begin seeing the increase".
Massage also has another function in treating IBS, in that it is an effective way to relieve and to prevent stress and anxiety.
