(Health-NewsWire.Net, June 23, 2015 ) Philadelphia, PA -- According to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, the state Senate committee has approved the bill which will allow shipment of wine to Pennsylvania residences.
Currently, Pennsylvania consumers are allowed to order shipments of wine to be delivered to their homes. These shipments can only be fulfilled by holders of limited winery licenses, which are only made available to producers of 200,00 gallons of wine or more each year, according to a Stacy Kriedeman, spokeswoman for the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board. This rule has been set in place since 2005, as a result of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that states which allow their own wineries to ship directly to consumers must also allow out-of-state wineries to do so as well.
According Liquor Control Board records, only a small number of the 267 wineries which hold that type of license are from other states.
The newly approved bill will now enable wineries anywhere to be eligible for a license which will allow the shipment of wine directly to consumers homes. Residents will be allowed to order up to 36 cases of wine from a particular winery within a one year time frame.
As a part of the new law, shippers would be required to verify the customer's age and adequately mark wine packages to reflect that the contents inside are alcoholic beverages.
An earlier version of this bill had been amended to change the tax on these alcoholic beverage shipments. The new bill proposes to replace the 18 percent liquor tax.
A spokeswoman for Senate Majority Leader Jake Corman, R-Centre told reporters that the bill may potentially receive a senate vote as soon as next week, and if it passes it will return to the House.
An associate from Drug Rehab Philadelphia comments "I don't necessarily agree that it's the best idea to ship wine directly to consumers homes, especially if those consumers have children. I believe that this could impose a great danger. However, I am hopeful that the consumers ordering these shipments and the shippers will both work together to ensure that these packages are getting into the right hands."
