(Health-NewsWire.Net, June 23, 2015 ) West Palm Beach, FL -- As the synthetic drug flakka becomes increasingly popular in the South Florida region, the incidence of increasingly bizarre crimes has increased also. In recent news a South Florida whom authorities believe to be under the influence of flakka, tried ro have sex with a tree and continuously screamed at bystanders and police that he was God. Another South Florida man was reported to be running nude down a busy city street during the daytime under the perception that he'd been being chased by a pack of German shepherds.
In a most recent incident police arrested 20-year-old Qushanna Doby of Boynton Beach. According to a police report, Doby had been arrested on child neglect charges after officers found her 1-year-old daughter outside of an office building along a busy road, crying and shivering in a dirty diaper. Doby revealed to police officers that she had suffered from hallucinations after using flakka.
The common denominator among these incidents and others that have occurred within the past few months, are the criminals use of flakka. The synthetic drug is rapidly gaining popularity in South Florida and is becoming more and more accessible, being sold for as low as $5 per dose. The drug initially appeared in Florida back in 2013, however over the past two years it's gained much popularity.
Authorities are comparing flakka to other synthetic drugs such as Ecstasy and bath salts, however official say flakka is easily accessible, especially since it can be shipped by mail in small quantities. The active ingredient in flakka is alpha-PVP, a chemical compound. Alpha-PVP is currently on the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration's list of controlled substances most likely to be abused. Generally flakka is produced and shipped out from countries such as China and Pakistan. The drug is sold in crystal form and is generally snorted, injected, or swallowed.
Based on the evidence which has been seized by police around Florida, the use of flakka is sharply increasing. According to Florida Department of Law Enforcement's crime labs, an increase in submissions for testing flakka rose from 38 submissions in 2013 to 244 in 2015. Broward Sheriff's Office laboratory also seen an increase in submissions growing from 200 in 2014 to 275 in just the first three months of 2015 according to spokeswoman Keyla Concepcion.
Police officers are currently battling with trying to keep the drug off the streets, according to Maines, of the Broward Sheriff's Office one of the main challenges is that flakka manufacturers make slight changes to the chemical makeup of flakka, tampering with efforts to adequately test for the drug.
A medical associate from West Palm Beach Drug Rehab commented "It's absolutely frightening what flakka is doing to South Florida, we already are faced with battling against the use of cocaine and other drugs, now yet another powerful drug to fight against. I am hopeful that we can all come together to do something in order to keep flakka off of our streets. these drugs need to be absolutely banned from being shipped to the U.S. from other countries, that's essentially the root of this issue. Once we get to the root of this growing problem, I believe we can put an end to it."
