(Health-NewsWire.Net, June 23, 2015 ) Dallas, TX -- According to ESPN, The University of Texas will begin selling beer and wine to fans during home games this fall.
Alcoholic beverages, including beer and wine were already being sold at other sporting events, however Royal-Memorial Stadium banned the sale of alcohol. University of Texas just announced that changes will take place and alcohol will now be sold at the stadium. The push for selling beer at University of Texas has been ongoing for many years but had been continuously pushed aside by the school's leaders. However, now that there are new leaders in place, the push for the sale of alcohol at football games has succeeded.
According to reports, University of Texas athletic director, Steve Patterson, proposed alcohol sales last year, but the idea was thrown out by former Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa. The new president, Greg Fenves said on his first day that he was a supporter of selling alcohol at football games, and the new Chancellor Bill McRaven was also in agreement.
With the ability to now sell beer, Texas can expect to earn extra revenue, in addition to it's Big 12 conference revenue share and other streams of income through the Longhorn Network.
Texas will join Big 12 schools West Virginia and Iowa State which already serve beer at their football games. West Virginia was one of the first colleges to experiment with selling beer at their sporting events, as a result other schools joined the trend.
An associate from Drug and Alcohol Rehab Dallas comments "I think that University of Texas should have stayed true to their rule of not selling alcoholic beverages at their games. There is clearly a reason that former leaders were against it, honestly the only incentive for selling beer would be the extra revenue. However, take into account the number of fans that will be driving home intoxicated after these games. It would be of no coincidence if rates of DUI arrests are alcohol-related car crashes occurred near University of Texas. I am hopeful that with these changes taking place that the school will also promote drinking responsibly in addition to promoting beer and wine."
