(Health-NewsWire.Net, June 29, 2015 ) Philadelphia, PA -- According to Health Day News, researchers believe that reality therapy could potentially help individuals overcome alcoholism. The conclusion comes as a result of a small study conducted by researchers in South Korea.
For the study, the researchers recruited 12 individuals who were being treated for alcoholism. The research participants underwent a week-long detox program, followed by two sessions of virtual reality sessions weekly for five weeks.
During the virtual reality sessions patients were presented with three virtual scenes: a relaxing environment, a high-risk setting taking place in a restaurant where others were drinking, and an aversion situation that featured the sights, sounds and smells of people getting sick from drinking too much alcohol.
According to the study, the results from the PET and CT scans of the research participants suggested that the participants had a reduced craving for alcohol after completing the virtual reality therapy.
Despite the study being small, the findings suggest that virtual reality therapy could help alcoholics says senior researcher Dr. Doug Hyun Han, of Chung-Ang University Hospital. Han says that the virtual reality therapy is helpful because it places recovering alcoholics in situations similar to real life and requires the individual to actively participate, according to Health Day News. He also added that the sessions are individualized. The individualized sessions provide the patients with a realistic stimulation of situations they may be faced with in real life after completing treatment. The virtual reality sessions give the patients the opportunity to better learn how to cope in those situations in a safe environment before they face them in the real world, according to researchers.
Han also added that there will need to be larger studies conducted to prove if the virtual reality therapy helps alcoholics stop drinking and avoid relapses, according to Health Day News.
A medical associate from Drug Rehab Philadelphia comments "If there is proof that virtual reality therapy works, I would hope that we could use it here at our treatment center. Alcoholism is one of the harder addictions to treat because unlike many other drugs, alcohol is legal, making it easy for recovering alcoholics to walk to the nearest store to buy a beer. I am open to adopting new and innovative ways to treat drug addiction and alcoholism so I am really excited about this study and studies similar to this one. The better ways we find to treat addiction and abuse, the better success rates we will have. "
