According to WTSP News, St. Pete Beach City Commissioners unanimously passed a clarified alcohol ordinance for its beach. The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office was faced with difficulties in trying to enforce the language of the ordinance 2015-10. In response, the city attorney re-wrote the ordinance as a means to make the rule clear.
The clarified ordinance states that drinking is prohibited on both public and private beaches.
The confusion on the ordinance was caused bt the sandbars which are located between the city's hotels and the shoreline. According to the ordinance, sandbars are private beach property meaning it cannot have alcohol on it. Beach go-ers will be required to keep all alcoholic beverages inside the hotel pool, bar, and inside areas.
St. Pete Beach City Commissioner Melinda Pletcher explained in an interview why the alcohol ordinance had been rewritten. "We have had a long standing tradition in St. Pete Beach that alcohol is not allowed on the white sandy beaches, so we are basically cleaning up the language so that the sheriffs are able to enforce that," said Pletcher.
According to the city manager, during the Fourth of July weekend there will be large electronic signs placed around the beach saying "no alcohol on the beaches."
