(Health-NewsWire.Net, July 01, 2015 ) Orlando, FL -- Rheumatoid arthritis is a debilitating condition, and it causes symptoms that significantly reduce the quality of life of patients. In addition to pain and discomfort, the condition also makes it impossible or difficult for patients to sleep well at night.
Researchers investigated the link between poor sleep and increased cases of disability in RA patients. According to the study, individuals who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis and who do not get good quality sleep are more susceptible to having problems functioning, such as tying shoes or buttoning skirts.
The study, which was published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, found that there was a link between poor sleep quality and increased disability among patients of rheumatoid arthritis. This is alarming, especially to individuals who are suffering from the condition and struggling to sleep well at night.
Faith S. Luyster, PhD, a researcher in the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing's Department of Psychiatry, stated that it can have a massive impact on the quality of life and health of RA patients if they are provided with the help they need to get a solid night's sleep.
"Sleep disturbance is very common among individuals who suffer from RA and it has previously been linked to higher levels of depression, fatigue and pain. However, less is known about the exact connection between the functional disability in RA patients and poor sleep," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.
Dr. Luyster and her colleagues looked into the relationship between disability and sleep quality among 162 RA patients for a minimum of two years and 14 years on average. The average age of the subjects was 59 and there were 76 percent who were female. The participants were made to fill out questionnaires involving questions about staying asleep or trouble falling asleep. There was also information about depression, pain severity, fatigue and functional disability.
It was found that 61 percent of the subjects were poor sleepers, as revealed in the sleep questionnaire. There was also a total of 33 percent who reported pain that was severe enough that it disrupted sleep at least three times per week. Adjustments were made according to age, duration of RA, and treatment and other illness, and this resulted in the significant connection between greater functional disability and sleep quality.
According to Dr. Luyster, there are several ways to get a better night's sleep, and one is to set a bed time and wake time that are consistent. Patients should also avoid consumption of caffeine and alcohol as well as reserve the use of the bed for sleeping or sex. They should also make the bedroom conducive to sleeping and one way to do it is to make it quiet, dark and comfortable.
Disability that is caused by arthritis can be prevented. Arthritis sufferers nowadays are using various measures, such as natural alternatives, just to improve their overall condition. One of the most popular remedies is curcumin supplements, which are believed to be effective in providing pain relief among arthritis sufferers (http://www.amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI/).
