Fitness experts used to think that long endurance training was needed to improve the cardio system. New research shows that there is a more efficient way of improving fitness. New studies show that interval training, alternating hi intensity & low intensity effort, is very beneficial for the heart and lungs. Hi intensity training is even more effective than endurance training at fat burning, due to the "after-burn" effect, a body will continue to burn calories & fat even after these super training sessions. Increasing exercise intensity with a healthy diet helps reduce cardiovascular disease.
A persons physical body just can't be transformed in thirty minutes, but over time, short intense workouts will produce results over months.
Many may have heard of HIIT "high intensity interval training", but that's not the only interval workout – metabolic conditioning, "MetCon"; a style of interval training created to challenge the exerciser & improve the assimilation of nutrients to the body with set rest to work ratios. This improvement in efficiency carries over to other activities so that athletes may shorten the performance time of their next event, competition or sport.
According to Dr. James Moore, VP in charge of product development at ABX, "the goal of met-con is to train the body to work at a greater intensity & increase the storage & delivery of energy. This involves pushing our heart & body to near maximum then allowing a short time for recovery & then repeating." As Moore explains, "when this is done consistently for several weeks, our bodies become more efficient, meaning we can, pump more blood, deliver more oxygen, and meet the demands of sports and exercise using less work."
With just 30 minutes of HIIT, exercise can exceed the benefits of longer cardio type workouts. Research shows the answer as to why can be found in enzyme systems & cell signal pathways, being stimulated by all out effort. In short, the on periods where the body is working hard creates a cascade of events leading to beneficial adapting, like an increase in mitochondria (the bodies power source) & an increase in the ability to burn fat. Varying as many elements as possible only increases the results.
While going all out can be advantageous, doing it every day can actually be limiting to success. If getting started with a new workout or adding met con to a training program, Moore advises doing no more than three - thirty minute sessions a week and less for beginners. Beware of adding Met-Con to other workout routines, since doing this with an exhausting lifting or cardio session may lead to injury due to over-training and fatigue.
Moore prefers movements like spiderman, plank-jacks, multi-planar squats, or star-jumps, which can be modified & may be done anywhere. Multi-planar, full-body exercises can also top machine-based exercises that isolate just 1 muscle group. "Make a circuit of 8 different exercises to cycle through," Moore recommends.
One last thing to think about before starting: pick the work to rest ratio. A 30 on -- 30-off ratio means going all out for thirty seconds, then a thirty second rest. Not ready for that? Moore suggests, "try twenty/forty or fifteen/thirty until your fitness level improves. The idea is to push towards maximum heart rate, not to compare yourself with others."
