(Health-NewsWire.Net, July 02, 2015 ) San Francisco, CA -- The latissimus dorsi or the lats is a muscle that runs from the low back and hips to the top of the upper arm. It is responsible for extension, adduction, transverse extension, flexion, and internal rotation of the shoulder joint. The lats help in many exercises like the bench press and and can also help in squats and deadlifts. Stretching the lasts regularly keep them from getting sore because the stretches keep the muscles loose. In his video, Barry Lavis demonstrates the proper way to stretching the lats using a WOD Nation resistance band.
As a certified coach and trainer, Lavis knows the benefits of stretches. For stretching the lats, he says that choosing the exercise band with the right resistance level is important. A thicker band is required for those who are stronger. WOD Nation resistance bands have different levels of resistance. They range from 10-35 pounds of resistance for the thinnest one and 60-175 pounds for the thickest one. These resistance bands are color-coded according to resistance levels.
Once the right band is chosen, the stretches demonstrated in the video is easy to follow. The goal in stretching is to loosen up the shoulders, lats, and back. It is advised that one should not tug at the band but rather relax and focus attention to one's side. The stretch for each side is only 30-60 seconds. The stretch can be done in about two minutes. It is quick and easy yet the results are beneficial. It is a good pull-up stretch, muscle up stretch, and shoulder stretch.
Tight lats result to discomfort and pain. Stretching this muscle with the use of a resistance band makes the muscle relaxed. Lat stretches should be done every time one exercises or whenever the muscle feels tense. As seen from the video, stretching the lats is easy and quick. Spending a couple of minutes for stretching can result to healthier and pain-free lats.
