(Health-NewsWire.Net, July 03, 2015 ) Orlando, Florida -- Pain is one of the things that are making arthritis patients' lives difficult. It doesn't just hinder them from functioning normally on a daily basis, but also keeps them awake at night. However, there seems to be good news for individuals who are suffering from the condition.
Weight loss is found to be helpful in reducing arthritis pain. Excess pounds have always been associated with severe pain among arthritis patients. It is important for sufferers to make some dietary and lifestyle changes to eliminate unwanted, excess pounds.
"Some experts also believe that even those who don't have arthritis and are overweight can also experience pain," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.
According to the research published in the journal called Obesity, excess weight in itself can cause pain. In a study, it was found that individuals who belonged to the most obese group were 2.5 times more susceptible to pain than those who had a normal body mass index.
Arthur A. Stone, PhD, and Joan E. Broderick, PhD, lead authors of the study and professors in the department of psychiatry and behavioral science in Stony Brook, stated that there was a steeper BMI-pain association among females than males, as well as for those who were older than 40 in comparison to younger individuals.
"The researchers analyzed data through telephone interviews of over one million people. The interviews were conducted by the Gallup Organization from 2008 to 2010," added O'Sullivan.
The results revealed that 36.8 percent who answered the survey had normal or low BMI, there were 38.3 percent who were considered overweight, and 24.9 percent were obese. Overweight participants reported pain that was 20 percent higher than those with a BMI of 25 or less. Obese individuals with a 30 to 35 BMI reported pain that was 68 percent higher. On the other hand, individuals with a 35 to 40 BMI experienced 136 percent higher rates of pain, and 254 percent among those with 40 BMI.
According to Broderick and Stone, one doesn't have to suffer from arthritis and other chronic conditions to be in pain. As a matter of fact, weight alone can significantly increase a person's risk for pain. It is also important to remember that weight can have an effect on the joints and can cause pain. This is one of the reasons why many people who suffer from arthritis are trying to lose weight.
There are several ways to combat arthritis pain, and one is to use a natural alternative such as glucosamine supplements. Glucosamine has long been used by individuals with arthritis, and is believed to be helpful in reducing arthritis pain (amazon.com/Glucosamine-Sulfate-Chondroitin-Supplement-Turmeric/dp/B00DUMO9X4/).
