The researchers also assessed the reactions of participants to various movement commands such as jumping. They found out that both legs, even the one that did not experience fatigue, demonstrated similar diminished responses that could potentially result in injury to the ACL or anterior cruciate ligament. There are four major ligaments that stabilize and provide support to the knee joint and one is the ACL. The prevalence of ACL injuries is increasing, and this is something that should not be taken for granted because it can increase one's risk of knee osteoarthritis later in life.
Scott McClean, PhD, assistant professor of Michigan's School of Kinesiology and lead researcher, believes that the brain has a major influence on the effects of the activities in both legs. Since they did not fatigue the other leg, but it still ended up weary, there was a chance that it was the brain that was getting tired.
Dr. McClean added that the brain might be too tired to make the right decisions and transmit the correct information down, even to the leg that was not supposed to be tired. Today, the studies on the prevention techniques for ACL injuries are focusing on training and strengthening the muscles that provide support in the knee joint.
