(Health-NewsWire.Net, July 09, 2015 ) Charlotte, NC -- Heroin has become the popular drug of choice for Americans nationwide, according to a study conducted by the CDC its usage has risen dramatically over the past decade. Reports show that the dramatic increase is impacting both men and women from many age groups and of all income levels.
Dr. Stephen Wyatt, the Medical Director of Addiction Medicine for Carolinas HealthCare System in Charlotte, NC suggests that people tend to begin using heroin after becoming addicted to prescription opioid drugs. This can be attributed to heroin having the same effect in the brain as opioid prescription drugs but are less expensive and easier to obtain than prescription pills.
A new report issued by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) revealed that those who abuse prescription opioid drugs are 40 times more likely to become addicted to heroin.
"We're seeing heroin affecting people in urban and rural areas, white, black and Hispanic, low, middle and high income. We're seeing heroin diffusing throughout society, but we can turn this around," says CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden.
In response to the growing heroin epidemic, the CDC suggests that more education is required for doctors who are faced with the difficult challenge of trying to decipher which patients are genuinely in need of opioid painkillers and which patients are at risk of abusing prescription drugs.
A medical associate from Drug and Alcohol Rehab Charlotte comments "It's quite frightening to learn that the heroin epidemic is steadily growing instead of declining. More and more people are jumping on the heroin wave and it's getting scarier. I'm not sure if heroin users are 100% sure of exactly how dangerous heroin is and the deadliness of this drug. I'm sure if more people were aware that less people would use heroin, therefore I am hopeful that the nation will continue to set forth efforts to raise awareness on the deadly effects of using heroin."
