(Health-NewsWire.Net, July 09, 2015 ) San Francisco, CA -- Stretching the elbows is one way to make them higher. High elbows are vital for the front rack position when working with barbells to achieve proper weight distribution. If a front rack position is not good, it can result to pain. It affects the ability to do press, push-press, jerk, front squat, and clean. This is because of tight muscles in the upper body. WOD Nation coach Barry Lavis demonstrates a couple of stretches that would keep the elbows ups for a better front rack position. When the elbows are high, they place the shoulders in a stronger and safer position.
The video shows how to do stretches that make a big difference on the front rack position. The stretches require a heavy resistance band and the one used in the video is a purple WOD Nation exercise band. These bands are color coded according to their resistance level. Lavis recommends a purple one with 40-80 pounds of resistance for women and a green band with 50-125 pounds of resistance for men.
There are two stretches demonstrated in the video. They are movements that help to distract and stretch. The first stretch allows the band to distract the triceps, under the shoulder, and part of the lat. It is important not to tug at the band but to let the band give a little bit of resistance. It takes only 30-60 seconds to stretch each side. The second stretch works on improving mobility even further.
After the two stretches, it can be observed that the elbow that has been stretched is noticeably higher than the one that was not stretched. High elbows mean a better front rack position. The body is better prepared for exercises like squats, jerks, and similar exercises. The stretches also reduce the risk of pain and injury. These stretches using the WOD Nation resistance band are easy to do, but they are effective in minimizing injury and preparing the body for specific exercises.
