(Health-NewsWire.Net, July 18, 2015 ) Chicago, Illinois -- As the temperature rises this summer, it is easy to forget the implications this can have on feet.
StomperJoe.com offers free tips to avoid foot problems this summer. The tips are helpful to the general population and to those who are known to be high risk. StomperJoe.com aims to increase awareness of foot problems and provide easy preventive or aftercare solutions.
As with many health issues, age can affect foot health and extreme summer heat and older people should take precautions to protect feet from the sun and heat.
The following foot care tips are meant to prevent foot injuries and other problems during summer:
- Wear shoes that are padded and cushioned, if not, put shoe inserts to facilitate cushion and support the foot. It will prevent plantar injuries when walking or running.
- Wear socks or no show socks made of materials that wick moisture off the feet. If the feet gets wet, moisture is trapped in between the toes and it will facilitate fungal growth leading to infection. It is also advised to use no show socks that are snug and fit. Wrong sizing can cause no show socks to slip off the feet often.
- Use shoes that are correct in size. Best to shop for shoes wearing the socks that is intended to use. For boat shoes, there are boat shoe socks available and are designed to give enough coverage to the feet without compromising its overall look.
- Use flip flops sparingly. Although it's the best season to wear one, podiatrists advise against using flip flops daily as it exposes the feet to higher risks of injuries and infections.
- Walk barefoot with caution. As it is the beach season, people are advised to check the sand as it can become too hot to walk barefoot, especially the times between 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
- Avoid areas that are prone to foot injuries and problems. Be mindful of the environment where feet are placed most of the time. Don't walk on flooded roads, murky water, swamps, etc. as the waters may contain bacteria or fungus that may result to infections. If you can't help but walk into these waters, make sure feet are cleaned as soon as possible with antibacterial soap and then pat dry feet with a clean towel.
- Keep the feet moisturized and sunscreen protected. Don't put lotions in between the toes as the moisture may become trapped and breed fungal infections.
- Always keep feet dry at all times. If you have to, bring extra socks when traveling so it can be changed anytime the feet are wet. Air out the feet too so it can dry up quickly.
