(Health-NewsWire.Net, July 22, 2015 ) Chattanooga, TN -- Yvonne Hitchcock, a director of Santulana, is concerned that children and adolescents are opting for energy drinks to boost performance rather than exercising. "The way energy drinks are advertised suggests to children and adolescents that this is the way to optimize performance. Young people should be taught that exercise, whether it be running, swimming, yoga or stretching and bouncing on a stability ball, has long term beneficial effects, rather than the immediate ‘up' these caffeine filled drinks provide."'
In the States it is estimated that over half the adolescent population consumes energy drinks and prefers them over regular sodas. Teachers throughout the States have noticed that pupils who consume these drinks are unable to concentrate and are prone to hyperactivity. Many schools are now only allowing pupils to drink water while they are on school premises in an effort to curtail the consumption of energy drinks among pupils.
The American Academy of Paediatrics has clearly stated that energy drinks have "no place in the diet of children and adolescents." Their concern is not only that energy drinks contain caffeine but they also contain natural supplements such as ginseng, guarana and taurine. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has warned that the combination of ginseng and caffeine can lead to high blood pressure and an increased heart rate. Guarana has large quantities of caffeine in it, so adding it to a drink already high in caffeine, can cause heart problems or exacerbate underlying heart problems.
The Centre for Science in the Public Interest has asked the FDA to put a health warning on all energy drinks. Many health bodies have also asked the FDA to look into the long term and short term effects of energy drinks on every sector of the population.
