(Health-NewsWire.Net, July 27, 2015 ) Philadelphia, PA -- According to MyFoxPhilly.com drug testing is now coming to e-sports. The Electronic Sports League (ESL) announced on Thursday that they will begin to randomly drug test players at their competitive video game tournaments.
ESL shared that they have set forth plans to work with the World Anti-doping Agency as a means to develop and enforce rules in regards to the use of performance-enhancing drugs.
The announcement from ESL was a result of a competitive video gamer boasting in an interview posted on YouTube that he, as well as his teammates used the drug Adderall during an ESl tournament in March, the players competed for $250,00 in prize money. Adderall is a prescription drug which is primarily prescribed to those with ADHD, however the drug is commonly abused to aid in enhancing focus.
According to the Cologne, Germany-based organization, the randomized drug tests will begin at the ESl One Cologne tournament which will takes place this August. ESL previously prohibited the use of drugs such as performance enhancers and alcohol, however they never actually enforced the rules by testing their players before competitions.
"We want to create a level playing field for all competitors and maintain the integrity of the sport," said James Lampkin, vice president of professional gaming at E.S.L. In addition, Lampkin suggested that to cancel out the challenge of testing online e-gamers, that all competitions should be held live and in person.
The announcement from ESL has been deemed a possible indicator that e-sports is evolving into a mainstream form of competitive entertainment.
