(Health-NewsWire.Net, July 27, 2015 ) Charlotte, NC -- According to new reports from the CDC, heroin use has increased across the United States among men and women alike, in majority of age groups, and every income level.
Heroin was once a drug which was predominantly used bt males living in urban areas, however the use of heroin has spiked in women, young people, and even those with higher income levels. The drug has been making its impact on the state of North Carolina as the upward trend in heroin use has resulted in heroin death increases from 38 in 2010 to a reported 183 in 2013, a 480% increase.
According to experts, many people have turned to heroin due to prescription opioid painkillers such a s Vicodin and Oxycontin becoming more and more expensive and more difficult to obtain. Heroin has become the popular substitute as it essentially induces the same effects as prescription painkillers, and costs about five times less on the street.
Gina Bussey, a Substance Abuse Clinician at North Carolina Support Services stated that she's seen a more demographically diverse clients, especially an increase in women, high income earners and high school/college-aged persons.
In response to the rapidly growing heroin crisis, the CDC is calling for a change in the protocol for prescribing painkillers and the expansion of access to substance abuse treatment facilities which can assist in reversing heroin overdose. "It's tough to have to be the one to explain to the parents of these students that they have been injecting heroin. And the parents are stunned because there's this belief that that's a low socio-economic urban problem, but it's not," says Bussey according to WNCN.
It has been suggested that the key in addiction recovery is seeking help in its early stages and implementing the use of naloxone kits or Overdose Rescue Kits. Naloxone, an opioid antagonist, assists in stopping the life threatening suppression of the central nervous and respiratory systems that results from a heroin overdose, ultimately allowing the person to breathe normally again.
In 2013, the state of North Carolina passed a bill which would increase the usage of Naloxone. First responders and many law enforcement agencies are now readily equipped with the overdose rescue kits. According to the North Carolina Harm Reduction Coalition, since the widespread use of Naloxone, 600 North Carolina residents have been rescued from drug overdoses.
A medical associate from Drug and Alcohol Rehab Charlotte comments "It's scary to learn that heroin use is still on the rise here in North Carolina. However, after learning this we as a state need to fight harder against ending both heroin and prescription drug abuse."
